What is inhalation sedation?

Inhalation sedation is a form of conscious sedation using nitrous oxide and oxygen, which helps the patient overcome anxiety at an accessible cost. It can be used with adults and with children who experience gagging or fear of surgery and needles, with people who cannot cooperate with the dentist because of health problems, or simply with patients who want to avoid the discomfort of treatment.

Nitrous oxide is a safe, non-irritant gas that brings a sense of calm without putting the patient to sleep. The patient stays consciously sedated throughout the procedure and can cooperate with the dentist.

How does it work?

During the session the patient breathes a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask placed over the nose. The effect can be felt almost immediately. The patient feels calm and relaxed, sometimes even euphoric, but stays aware and can talk with the dentist.

How long does the effect last?

The effect comes on very quickly and leaves the body just as quickly. Within 3 to 5 minutes of the gas being stopped, the patient recovers completely, with no side effects, and can leave the clinic unaccompanied. Nitrous oxide does not affect the ability to drive.
